Why do so many of us develop crushes on the same animated characters? Are the most beloved simply the best reflections of established  gender roles and scripts of romance and sexuality?

Or maybe what makes them so iconic is their malleability to the fan's imagination?

In an unofficial experiment, Julia asked anonymous participants to label the most eye-catching character in the life-size line-up and to play a game of 'Fuck, Marry, Kill and Friend' with them. This is a visualisation of the results and subsequent research.

During her MA, Julia spent hours trawling social media to get to the bottom of different cultural phenomena.

She read hundreds of Letterboxd reviews to investigate if the film focused social media page can work as a space where communal anticapitalist imagination is cultivated in the face of 'Capitalist Realism'.

She also watched thousands of TikTok videos to explore why #WhereIsBritney conspiracies gained traction in late 2021, and collected a year's worth of memes and images posted to sex toy retailer Instagram pages, among other things.
